On November 1st, Wintertaling organized a meeting about Brexit. The speaker was Rem Korteweg, senior research fellow at the Clingendael Institute.
The very well-informed speaker gave a fairly comprehensive overview of the state of affairs in the negotiations, the points of contention, the possible solutions and the consequences in three quarters of an hour.
Speaking fluent English, so that international clients could also attend, Rem Korteweg guided his audience through topics such as the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland, the shift in power and voting in the EU, and centuries-old treaties between the Netherlands and the United Kingdom that we could rely on in the event of a hard Brexit. Concepts such as "backstop" and "voting weights" were also discussed.
During and at the end of the presentation there was ample opportunity to ask questions.
Afterwards, attendees had a drink to celebrate the uncertain outcome of Brexit while enjoying delicious fish and chips.
