Unique structure: everybody is a stakeholder
Amsterdam, 1 March 2021 – Wintertaling Corporate M&A and Wintertaling Construction law combine offices to form Wintertaling Advocaten (attorneys at law). The new Amsterdam firm, building upon a rich tradition and wishing to expand soon, presents 15 lawyers and professional support staff. Everybody with a permanent contract will become co-owner of the firm.
Until recently Wintertaling Corporate M&A and Wintertaling Construction law were part of a corporate platform with Wintertaling Notary corporate B.V. and Wintertaling Real Estate & Employment B.V. Now Wintertaling Corporate M&A and Wintertaling Construction law combine to focus on and expand their innovative power. “Our business is to be entrepreneurial. We shall not focus on financial targets, as many firms tend to do nowadays, but we will be directing every efforts towards how to best meet our clients needs.” says Marein Smits, one of the initiators of the new firm.
Areas of law
In its new setting Wintertaling offers services in Corporate M&A (Litigation, Startups/Scale-ups, Family Business, Technology, Restructuring and Business Valuation) and Real Estate law (Construction, Project Development, Environmental, Lease, Sale and Purchase). The firm boasts a France Desk. They will continue the close cooperation with the Notary Department that has joined, under Sabine van Suijdam’s leadership, the specialized notarial firm Hermans & Schuttevaer in Amsterdam.
Two former Wintertaling team members shall reconnect with the new firm: Martin Poelman and Yord Koudstaal. The new Wintertaling is a mix of very experienced M&A-lawyers and real estate lawyers (together 100+ years of practice) and upcoming talents who are both knowledgeable and service oriented. On the whole there are now fifteen lawyers and legal professionals at Wintertaling. Bas van Vliet, Contruction law: “On the short term we shall attract extra lawyers. Our drive is to deliver quality without fuss. It is wonderful to see that young and very talented lawyers trained by us become involved in our practices.”
Everybody is co-owner
Besides being a provider of excellent services, the founders have the ambition to offer a safe and fun place to work and a deferential leadership seeking to stimulate professional development. The new structure makes all permanent employees co-owner, which is unique among law firms. “I may be the initiator and the CEO, but everybody is shareholder and shares in the profits. The distribution of profit will be resolved transparently by the general meeting”, says Smits. “That is a novelty in our profession. We are entrepreneurs together, we all contribute and we ensure that every persons gets his/her just share.”
